Early Life
Gough, the eighth of eleven siblings, was born in Ennis, County Clare, the daughter of an electrician. Kelly Gough, an actress, is one of her younger sisters. She received soprano training before relocating to London at the age of 15. When she was 18 years old, she received a scholarship to attend the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA) in Wandsworth. She graduated from ALRA in 2003.
Career
She was nominated in 2012 for the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for her performances in Nancy Harris’s Our New Girl at the Bush Theatre and Desire Under the Elms by Eugene O’Neill at the Lyric Hammersmith. In the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse’s debut performance of The Duchess of Malfi in London in January 2014, she played Julia. She gave a “electrifying” performance as a recovered drug addict in Duncan Macmillan’s People, Places and Things, directed by Jeremy Herrin, at the National Theatre in London in September 2015.
In March 2016, she returned to the part when the play moved to the Wyndham’s Theatre, and as a result, she was honoured with the Olivier Award for Best Actress. She returned to the National Theatre in April 2017 and received the 2018 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Harper in Marianne Elliot’s revival of Tony Kushner’s drama Angels in America. After that, Gough went back to People, Places & Things for its transfer to New York. In February 2018, Gough and the majority of the London cast reprised their roles in the Broadway adaptation of the National Theatre’s production of Angels in America as Harper.
