He made his professional debut in the States because the JBC had only granted him a domestic boxing licence on January 31, 2019, which would have otherwise prevented him from competing in Japan.
On May 4, 2019, in the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, Iwata fought Daiki Kameyama, the 2018 All Japan Light Flyweight “Rookie of the Year.” He was declared the winner of the fight by all three judges, who gave him scores of 58-56 and 59-54 respectively. Despite having won almost all of the rounds in the fight, Iwata didn’t seem happy with how he performed.

On November 7, 2019, Iwata and Alejandro Cruz Valladares squared off in the main event of the undercard to the bantamweight title fight between Nonito Donaire and Naoya Inoue. At the 2:10 minute mark of the fifth round, he stopped Valladares with a barrage of blows to win the bout by technical knockout.
