Early Life
After meeting Norifumi Yamamoto when he was just 9 years old, Shokichi Iwata developed an interest in fighting sports. In his second year of middle school, he started boxing. In his third year of middle school, he took first place in the U-15 national boxing competition. Iwata attended the Hiji High School after completing middle school.
Shokichi Iwata gained important victories over Takuma Inoue and Kosei Tanaka during his high school amateur career, and in his third year of high school, he won the national boxing competition. On the basis of a sports suggestion, Iwata enrolled in the Waseda University’s Sport Sciences programme after completing high school.
Boxing Career
At the StubHub Center in Carson, California, on December 8, 2018, Shokichi Iwata faced off in his first professional match against Joel Bermudez. He prevailed by knockout in the fourth round. He made his professional debut in the States because the JBC had only granted him a domestic boxing licence on January 31, 2019, which would have otherwise prevented him from competing in Japan.
On May 4, 2019, in the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, Iwata fought Daiki Kameyama, the 2018 All Japan Light Flyweight “Rookie of the Year.” He was declared the winner of the fight by all three judges, who gave him scores of 58-56 and 59-54 respectively. Despite having won almost all of the rounds in the fight, Iwata didn’t seem happy with how he performed.
On July 12, 2019, at the EDION Arena Osaka in Osaka, Japan, Iwata was slated to fight Paolo Sy on the undercard of the WBA middleweight title match between Rob Brant and Ryota Murata. He prevailed with a technical knockout in the fifth round. In the third round, Shokichi Iwata sustained a gash above his right eye as a result of an unintentional head collision. On November 7, 2019, Iwata and Alejandro Cruz Valladares squared off in the main event of the undercard to the bantamweight title fight between Nonito Donaire and Naoya Inoue. At the 2:10 minute mark of the fifth round, he stopped Valladares with a barrage of blows to win the bout by technical knockout.
Iwata was supposed to compete against Ryo Narizuka on October 2, 2020. He prevailed with a technical knockout in the seventh round. Against June 5, 2021, Iwata was slated to take on Toshimasa Ouchi. With scores of 78-73, 79-72, and 78-73, he prevailed via unanimous decision.
Iwata vs. González – Iwata will face Jonathan González, the current WBO light flyweight champion, it was confirmed on September 3, 2022. On November 1, 2022, a light flyweight unification match between Kenshiro Teraji and Hiroto Kyoguchi was scheduled, with their fight serving as the co-main event.
Japanese champion – Shokichi Iwata was scheduled to compete against Rikito Shiba for the vacant Japanese light flyweight championship on September 11, 2021, at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall. Iwata, who had made weight, tested positive for COVID-19 the day before the bout, therefore it had to be postponed. The championship match was moved up to November 5, 2021.
Iwata used a technical knockout in the ninth round to win his first professional ten-round bout. He looked to knock Shiba out in rounds six and eight, knocking him down twice, while referee Tetsuya Iida deemed the second knockdown to be a slip.
Shokichi Iwata pushed Shiba back with a barrage of blows as soon as the ninth round got underway, forcing the referee to stop the bout. Iwata was scheduled to defend the Japanese light-flyweight championship for the first time against Toshimasa Ouchi.
The bout was slated to be the main event of the “Dynamic Glove” event on March 5, 2022, and it was aired on G+. Iwata knocked Ouchi out in the opening round with a counter-right hand. Even though Ouchi was able to get up off the floor in time, the referee had to stop the fight because of Ouchi’s shaky standing. After this triumph, the East Japan Boxing Association gave Iwata the MVP prize for the month of March.
Japanese, WBO AP and OPBF champion – On July 2, 2022, in the Korakuen Hall, Shokichi Iwata was scheduled to defend his second Japanese championship against OPBF light-flyweight champion Kenichi Horikawa. The vacant WBO Asia Pacific championship will be fought in addition to the Japanese and OPBF titles.
Iwata prevailed via unanimous decision after receiving scores of 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112. Following this triumph, he was handed the July “Fighter of the Month” award by the East Japan Boxing Commission. The Japanese Boxing Association presented him with the “Skill Award” for the calendar year 2022 on August 19, 2022.
