At the age of 18, Juan Francisco Estrada made his professional debut on August 30, 2008. Exactly two years later, in October 2010, Estrada received his first regional belt. He obtained the WBC Mundo Hispano super flyweight title by KOing Manuel Almendariz. In May 2011, Estrada lost to Juan Carlos Sánchez Jr. for the first time. Sánchez has a size advantage over most flyweights thanks to his height of 5 feet 8 inches. Estrada and Sánchez exchanged knockdowns, but Estrada was defeated by a majority decision.
Boxing Career
In September 2016, Juan Francisco Estrada gave up his championships after three and a half years as the undisputed flyweight champion and five title defences in order to compete in the super flyweight division. Estrada claimed that he was unable to maintain his flyweight of 112 pounds. In October 2016 in his hometown of Puerto Peasco, Estrada made his return to the ring after a year away. He faced off against gatekeeper Raymond Tabugon. Estrada won a straightforward unanimous decision (100-90, 100–90, 100–90).
Estrada vs. Cuadras – Estrada’s opponent, Carlos Cuadras, was made public in June 2017. Cuadras was the required opponent for Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, the World Boxing Council champion, after Sor Rungvisai defeated Román González by unanimous decision. However, in view of the controversy surrounding the González-Sor Rungvisai verdict, the WBC mandated a rematch between Sor Rungvisai and González. The next available ranked competitor, Estrada, was up next for Cuadras to fight. The match was slated to take place on September 9, 2017, in Carson’s StubHub Center, as part of the Sor Rungvisai-González undercard.
On fight night, Cuadras appeared to take the upper hand in the opening rounds by switching hits, throwing more punches, and getting them all in. But in the second half of the fight, Estrada was able to gradually impose his methodical approach, even knocking Cuadras out in round 11. After some uncertainty, Michael Buffer corrected his error and declared Juan Francisco Estrada the winner by unanimous decision. Initially, he had named “Carlos Estrada” as the winner of the contest (114-113, 114–113, 114–113).
Estrada vs Gonzalez II – A highly awaited rematch between Juan Francisco Estrada and WBA (Super) super flyweight champion Román González took place on March 13th, 2021. The two had previously fought in 2012, with Gonzalez coming out on top by unanimous decision. This was their second encounter. It was the busiest bout at 115 pounds that the company has ever tracked due to both combatants’ heavy punching, with Compubox giving both competitors credit for 2529 total punches thrown. Gonzalez appeared to have narrowly outlanded Estrada in an exciting battle. Nevertheless, Estrada won the bout by a score of 117-111 and 115-113 from two judges, while Gonzalez won by a score of 115-113 from the third judge.
