On Saturday night, Ryan Garcia made an outstanding debut at Madison Square Garden. On the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Rocky Fielding, the powerful, quick-handed lightweight prospect twice downed Braulio Rodriguez before stopping him in the fifth round. With a right-left combination in the opening round and a left hook in the fifth, Garcia knocked Braulio Rodriguez to the ground. Following the second knockdown, Rodriguez was unable to respond to referee Ron Lipton’s count. At 1:14 in the fifth round, their 10-round contest was called off.
The 20-year-old Garcia (17-0, 14 KOs) fought for the first time with Jose “Chepo” Reynoso and Eddy Reynoso, Alvarez’s trainers, on his side. After Garcia’s previous performance, in which the worn-out Garcia was buzzed by light-punching Carlos Morales, they started training him (17-4-3, 6 KOs). Garcia, a boxer from Victorville, California, won that fight by significant margins (98-92, 98-92), but one judge gave it a draw (95-95).
Garcia and his father/trainer Henry were persuaded by his performance in that fight on September 1 in Indio, California, to employ the Reynosos to teach him. Garcia stated, “I wasn’t seeking for the knockout. “I wanted to prove to them that I am for serious and that I can fight,”
Rodriguez of the Dominican Republic suffered his second straight defeat by technical knockout. Rodriguez (19-4, 17 KOs) was stopped by Puerto Rico’s Christopher Diaz (24-1, 16 KOs) in the fourth round of their fight on March 17. At the start of the fifth round, Rodriguez attacked Garcia and attempted to rough him up. Garcia moved away from him, let go of his grip, and used a left hook to knock him to the ground, ending the fight.
With only a minute left in the fourth round, Rodriguez launched a barrage of punches at Garcia. Rodriguez stepped out of Garcia’s line of fire before Garcia retaliated against his seasoned foe. In the middle of the third round, Rodriguez attempted to fight from a southpaw stance, but Garcia wasn’t deterred. Towards the end of the third round, he backed Rodriguez up against the ropes, but Rodriguez stuck his tongue out and made fun of Garcia.
With 53 seconds left in the first round, Garcia knocked Rodriguez out by hammering him with a straight right and then a left hook that put him to the ground. Rodriguez got to his feet and continued to fight until the round was over.
