Early Life
Claressa Shields was a junior in high school in Flint, Michigan, where she was born and raised, in May 2012. Her father, Bo Shields, who had competed in clandestine leagues, introduced her to the sport. From the time Shields was two years old until she was nine, Bo was incarcerated. He discussed boxer Laila Ali with her once he was released, piqued her interest in the sport.
Bo, however, insisted that Claressa Shields wait until she was eleven before taking up boxing since he thought it was a sport for males. She started boxing at Berston Field House in Flint at that time, where she also met Jason Crutchfield, her trainer and coach. Shields attributes her grandmother’s encouragement to her decision to reject gender-based limitations.

Claressa Shields committed to a three-year deal with Professional Fighters League in November 2020, and it was anticipated that she would make her mixed martial arts debut in 2021. Since initially announcing her MMA debut, Shields has also started practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has travelled to train with Holly Holm and IBJJF no gi World Champion Roberto Alencar. Claressa Shields competed in her maiden scheduled eight-round fight against Sydney LeBlanc on June 16, 2017, as the main event of the “Detroit Brawl.” After Mery Rancier withdrew owing to visa concerns, LeBlanc agreed to continue with three days’ notice. Shields prevailed by unanimous decision following all eight rounds. Shields won the WBC super-middleweight title as well as the vacant IBF super-middleweight belt after defeating Nikki Adler on August 4, 2017, in Detroit. The referee had to intervene to defend the unbeaten Nikki Adler after the fifth round TKO. The brawl aired on Showtime.
Shields defeated 17-0 Tori on January 12, 2018, to win the WBAN super-middleweight championship while retaining her WBC and IBF female super middleweight championships.
