On 7 June 2019, it was revealed that Ward would sign a professional contract with the Times Square Boxing Co. in New York instead of attempting to qualify for a second Olympics, with Lou DiBella and Ken Casey serving as advisors. Joe Ward started his pro career on 5 October 2019 at Madison Square Garden, but it would be disastrous as the fighter dislocated his kneecap. Ward was defeated by a technical knockout in his fight with Marco Delgado due to a freak injury in the second round.
