Personal Life
At the age of 17, Mahmoud started his career in hand-to-hand combat with Thai boxing. He became the youngest German Muay Thai Champion ever after two years. At the age of 19, he became the German and European champion in Thai-Boxing in 2005. Mahmoud was welcomed in 2000 to a training programme for experienced fighters at the renowned Max Schmeling Gym in Berlin because of his background in Thai-Boxing. Here, under the direction of renowned German boxing coach Ulli Wegner, his expert boxing career officially began.
A fight at a kebab shop in Essen, Germany, in 2015 resulted in a hit-and-run attack that left Charr shot multiple times in the mid-region and forced him to undergo emergency surgery that evening to save his life. At the time of the episode, Charr was partying with rapper Kay One. This was after a confrontation with an online thug who had been abusing the boxer for a few weeks. The offender, who Charr identified to the police, turned himself in. Charr underwent a double hip replacement surgical surgery in May 2017.
Career
On September 8, 2012, in Moscow, Russia, Charr faced up against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko after compiling an ideal record of 21-0. With a right snare in the second round, Charr was destroyed. The fight was stopped in the fourth round due to a cut Charr received from Klitschko’s fists. Charr vigorously contested the stoppage, but the decision stood and Charr suffered the first professional loss of his career.
On February 22, 2013, in Galaţi, Romania, Charr defended his WBC International Silver heavyweight crown against Yakup Saglam. He challenged the victorious Haye at the post-battle public interview of the David Haye vs. Derek Chisora fight on July 14, 2012., Charr and Haye agreed to fight in Manchester Arena on June 29, 2013, but Haye withdrew on May 14 due to a hand injury sustained during training. Haye went on to agree to fight Tyson Fury instead on September 28, but that session was also postponed.
In victories over Kevin Johnson, Dennis Bakhtov, and Oleksiy Mazikin, Charr improved his record to 26-1 before facing off against Alexander Povetkin on May 30, 2014, in Moscow, Russia, for the vacant WBC International title. Charr suffered his second loss in his professional career by being knocked out in the seventh round of the bout. The first of five such sessions, in which Charr defeated Povetkin, took place in Russia. The last of these sessions, which took place on August 22, 2015 in Grozny, Chechnya, ended with a devastating one-punch knockout loss to Mairis Breidis in the fifth round.
After increasing his record to 30-4, Charr challenged Alexander Ustinov for the vacant WBA (Regular) title on November 25, 2017, in Oberhausen, Germany, and won by unanimous decision. The victory suggested that Charr was the first German heavyweight championship holder in 85 years, despite the “Normal” title being a backup to the “Super” title held at the time by Anthony Joshua by the WBA. In September 2018, only a few days before Charr was scheduled to defend his WBA (Regular) championship against Fres Oquendo, Charr tested positive for drostanolone and trenbolone.
