Boxing Career
Jessica Nery Plata is now listed as the second-best active female light flyweight in the world by BoxRec as of May 2020. On July 9, 2011, Plata made her professional debut against Estrella Valverde at the Jose Cuervo Salon in Mexico City, winning by majority decision (MD) after four rounds. On April 21, 2012, at the Estadio José Lerma Pérez in Ocoyoacac, Mexico, she defeated Ibeth Zamora Silva by unanimous decision (UD) after three additional victories, one of which was by stoppage.
Before suffering the first loss in her career through UD on August 1, 2015, against former world champion Esmeralda Moreno in a non-title bout at the Auditorio del Bicentenario in Morelia, Mexico, she won her next ten fights and successfully defended her WBC Youth championship seven times. The three judges gave Moreno victories by scores of 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. Before meeting Maria Magdalena Rivera on October 14, 2017, at the Poliforum in Ocotlán, Mexico, with the vacant WBF female flyweight title on the line, she recovered from her loss by recording five victories, one of which was a knockout.
Plata won the underappreciated world title by unanimous decision after receiving scores of 97-93 from two judges and 96-94 from the third. The WBC interim female light flyweight title was on the line in her next match, which took place on November 18 at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Ciudad Obregón, Mexico, against Kenia Enriquez. With scores of 97-92, 97-93, and 96-93, Plata was put to the ground in the final seconds of the tenth and final round, suffering her second career loss. In her subsequent contest, she went up against unbeaten champion Silvia Torres at the Domo Sindicato de Trabajadores IMSS in Mexico City on April 14, 2018, in an attempt to win a second interim world title.
In a contest she dedicated to her mother, who had passed away in the months before, Plata won the WBA interim female light flyweight title by split decision (SD), with two judges awarding her victories of 98-93 and 96-94 and Torres receiving a 97-94 verdict from the third judge.
