Early Life
Edson Barboza Jr is a native of Rio de Janeiro’s Nova Friburgo. He was born 28 weeks early, and doctors gave him a 50/50 chance of making it past infancy. He started training in Muay Thai and competing at the age of 8. His 25-3 professional Muay Thai record includes 17 first-round finishes and 22 knockout victories. Barboza arrived in the country in January 2009.
He defeated Aaron Steadman by way of first-round TKO in Tampa, Florida, in April 2009 to launch his professional MMA career. In his subsequent contest, Barboza won the lightweight title by KOing Lee King in the second round in the Renaissance MMA organisation. Later that year, he defended the title against King as well, triumphing via first-round submission.
MMA Career
2010 – On November 20, 2010, at UFC 123, Edson Barboza Jr was scheduled to face Darren Elkins in his UFC debut. Elkins, however, was pulled off the card due to an injury and was replaced by Mike Lullo, a newbie. Barboza stopped Lullo with a leg kick early in the third round to win by TKO.

2011 – On March 19, 2011, he defeated Anthony Njokuani at UFC 128 by unanimous decision. Honors for Fight of the Night went to both competitors. At UFC 134, Ross Pearson was defeated by Barboza by split decision. Fight of the Night bonus accolades were awarded to each competitors.
2020 – He declared his intention to drop to the featherweight class on December 31, 2019. On May 2, 2020, at UFC Fight Night: Hermansson vs. Weidman, he was slated to compete in a featherweight match against Josh Emmett. Dana White, however, revealed that the event had been postponed on April 9. Instead, on May 16, 2020, at UFC on ESPN: Overeem vs. Harris, Barboza fought Dan Ige. He was defeated in the fight by yet another contentious split verdict. There were 18 MMA media outlets, and 16 of them gave Barboza the win.
2021 – Barboza inked a new multi-bout contract with the company on February 25, 2021, though he still had one fight left on his previous contract. Barboza disclosed the contract was inked for six fights in May. On May 15, 2021, Barboza and Shane Burgos squared up at UFC 262.
Burgos had a delayed response after being knocked out by a right cross, which allowed him to win the bout by knockout in the third round. Barboza won the $75,000 Fight of the Night bonus for this match. On August 28, 2021, he battled Giga Chikadze at UFC on ESPN 30. After a back-and-forth battle, Barboza was defeated by third-round TKO.
2022 – At UFC 272, Barboza took on Bryce Mitchell on March 5, 2022. He was defeated by a score of unanimous decisions. At UFC Fight Night 213 on October 29, 2022, Ilia Topuria and Barboza were slated to square off. He, however, withdrew due to a knee issue in late September.
