In a thrilling eight-round heavyweight fight, the 2016 Olympic quarterfinalist from Cuba outlasted fellow countryman Geovany Bruzon to claim the victory by unanimous decision. In a rare encounter between unbeaten Cuban heavyweights on Saturday night at Hollywood, Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, judges John Rupert (78-74), Toby Tamarkin (77-75), and Peter Zamoyski (78-74) all gave Pero the victory.
Throughout the first four rounds, Pero—a Cuban southpaw who is currently based in Miami and is unbeaten—landed the most impactful blows, but he never did so without receiving heavy bombardment in return.
Despite taking numerous clean left hands from his countryman, Bruzon had a strong chin and managed to stay upright and as competitive as his skill set would allow.
Round five marked a significant shift in the tide. Bruzon, a fellow southpaw from Cuba who now resides and trains in Las Vegas, used a straight left punch after a right uppercut to knock Pero off balance. After being forced to clinch, Pero spent the remainder of the round continuing to box and move to get his mind off things. In a heated round six, Pero was forced to compete with a resurgent Bruzon.
Although Pero soon switched from boxing to trade as he recognised the chance to attack Bruzon, Bruzon gained confidence from the previous round and took the lead for most of the exchanges.
In the seventh round, that gut feeling came true. Pero launched an assault and delivered a vicious right punch to the torso of Bruzon, breaking him. While a succeeding right hook landed well below Bruzon’s beltline, it caused a brief break and a strong warning from the referee Samuel Burgos. Several left hands also found their way upward.
