On February 24, 2018, at London’s York Hall, he faced Ronnie Clark for the vacant IBF European super-featherweight title. Barrett was defeated after 12 rounds by decision. After a hesitant first round, the battle picked up steam in the second as Barrett chose to fight at a distance and had success with body shots while Clark moved in to work on the inside. Much of the same was witnessed in the following rounds, with Barrett throwing blows from a distance and Clark pressuring the pace to work at close range. Barrett was knocked out of the fight 1 minute into the sixth round by a straight left-right uppercut combination from southpaw Clark after receiving a warning for a low blow.
For the next minute, Zelfa Barrett remained on the defensive, dodging and blocking blows while the rare hook or uppercut connected. In the final minute of the round, Barrett started to successfully retaliate. With Clark still pressing the action and landing single shots to keep the rounds tightly contested, Barrett was able to strike his combinations at range with greater frequency as he grew weary in the second half of the fight. Clark won the fight by a score of 116-111 from two judges, and 114-114 from the third, who declared a draw.
He defeated journeyman Edwin Tellez twice in a row before facing Lyon Woodstock on June 15, 2019, at the First Direct Arena, for the vacant Commonwealth super-featherweight title. He won by unanimous decision. The fight was judged 117-111 by two judges and 118-110 by the third judge.
On August 14, 2021, Viorel Simion, a veteran, fought up against Barrett. At the conclusion of the fourth round, Simion walked out from the fight. On December 18, 2021, Barrett challenged Bruno Tarimo in a super featherweight championship eliminator for the IBF. His three judges scored the bout 117-110, 117-110, and 116-111 in his favour.
