Career
On June 12, 2009, David Avanesyan made his professional debut. He defeated fellow debutant Vazgen Agadzhanyan via a four-round unanimous decision (UD). A month later, on July 11, Avanesyan faced Andrey Klimov in his second match, losing UD after six rounds. The following four years saw him win twelve straight fights, winning the Russian welterweight belt and two WBC regional titles along the way.
After a split tie with Aslanbek Kozaev on March 16, 2013, David Avanesyan’s winning streak came to an end. For Avanesyan, 2015 and 2016 were successful years. He defeated Charlie Navarro in nine rounds on November 7, 2015, to win the vacant WBA interim welterweight title.
Avanesyan vs. Peterson – Early reports in December 2016 indicated that Avanesyan and former light welterweight world champion Lamont Peterson would square off in a bout for the WBA (Regular) championship to be defended. For February 2017, a location in the US was being discussed. The fight was scheduled to take place on February 18 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, as part of the undercard to Adrien Broner vs. Adrán Granados, which was broadcast on Showtime, according to a spokeswoman for Avanesyan on January 11, 2017.
Avanesyan lost a nail-biting UD decision to Peterson in a fight that ESPN called “very competitive and entertaining,” failing to successfully defend his title. Peterson won with scores of 116–112 from two judges and a tighter 115–113 from the third. Avanesyan earned $75,000, while Peterson took home $250,000 in pay.
