Early Life
At the Dagestan State University, where he graduated in the sport faculty, Magomed Ankalaev first started training in Greco-Roman wrestling for a year. Career
On January 18, 2014, at Oplot Challenge 96, Magomed Ankalaev made his professional debut. He prevailed over Vasily Babich of Ukraine by majority decision in a competitive match. Professional Career
Magomed Ankalaev competed in his first promotional match against Paul Craig at UFC Fight Night: Werdum vs. Volkov in March 2018. Ankalaev controlled the battle for the better part of two rounds, winning with crisp striking, takedowns, and top control. In the first round, Ankalaev even seriously injured Craig with a body kick. Ankalaev suffered his first professional defeat at precisely 4:59 of round three when Craig caught him with a triangle choke in the final five seconds of the round.
Ankalaev and Jan Bachowicz were slated to square off on December 10, 2022, at UFC 282. However, after Ji Procházka gave up his light heavyweight title due to a shoulder injury and Procházka’s opponent, Glover Teixeira, declined to take Ankalaev’s place, the contest was elevated to a title battle for the vacant UFC light heavyweight championship.
