On July 16, 2022, David Jimenez was scheduled to compete against Ricardo Rafael Sandoval for the WBA flyweight championship as part of the undercard between Ryan Garcia and Javier Fortuna. By unanimous decision, he prevailed in the bout. Two of the three judges gave him a 114–112 victory, and the third judge gave the fight a 113–113 tie. In addition to being penalized a point in the seventh round for holding and hitting, Jiménez knocked Sandoval out in the eleventh round.
