When Willy Hutchinson challenges the seasoned Croatian Emil Markic for the WBO Intercontinental Championship on January 28 at the OVO Arena in Wembley, he will compete for his first big title at light heavyweight.
The former World Amateur champion will add to the light heavyweight theme of the evening, which will be highlighted by Anthony Yarde’s fight for Artur Beterbiev’s undisputed world titles. Karol Itauma, a young light heavyweight contender, competes on the programme for the WBC International title, which is also up for grabs.
Hutchinson, 24, attempted to win the British super middleweight title against Lennox Clarke in March 2021 but was unsuccessful. He then quickly dropped down to 175 pounds and won by stoppage over Karel Horejsek and Luca Spadaccini. The Scot presently has a 15-1 record, with 11 of his victories coming by means of knockout. With 36 fights under his belt and only three losses, Markic is an experienced fighter. He is well-known in the UK for his shootout with Callum Johnson at York Hall in April 2021, when the two men battled for the WBO Global championship.
After defeating Kavin Gebhard to win the same title the year before, Markic won the WBO European championship in 2019 by defeating Tomas Adamek. He also defeated Denis Liebau in 2018 to win the WBF world light heavyweight title, and he had held the WBU version of the title in 2015. Hutchinson is ecstatic to be back in the title race.
“This is my big chance to enter the light heavyweight title picture and put myself on the road to competing for a world title. I want to get there, but I have to beat Emil Markic first, who is a strong opponent.
“I need this kind of fight to advance to the next level, but Markic has a lot of experience. On January 28, I’ll put on a performance to remind everyone of who I am and what I stand for. “I’m working hard every day here in Spain, putting in the hours, and getting better every day. I’m back to my best right away. I shall watch the main event with interest once I fasten my belt because it is a magnificent spectacle to be on at Wembley.
