Steven Nelson is competing for the first time since defeating DeAndre Ware via TKO in September 2020, which came after an Achilles tendon tear. Veteran of the U.S. Army, Nelson worked in satellite communications for the 7th Special Forces Group for eight years and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008–2009. Prior to starting his professional career, he was stationed in Colorado Springs and joined the Army’s World Class Athlete Program boxing team.
In preparation for December 10, he is exercising with Crawford, a fellow Omaha native and lifelong buddy, at their training facility in Colorado Springs. The following quotes from Nelson discuss his training camp, his fight with Ballard, competing at home on BLK Prime PPV, and other topics. About his most recent training camp:
“Training camp is going quite well. We’ve participated in other camps in Colorado Springs together, but this one stands out for all of us because of Bud’s drive and the amount of effort he put into pushing the group. I’ve been out of the ring for two years due to a torn Achilles, so I can’t wait to go back in.
It truly seems like the world is against our squad. Bud and the coaches forced me to improve. You won’t survive at this camp if you aren’t physically capable. Regarding his contest with James Ballard: “I’m going to gently destroy Ballard,” she said. Despite my difficulties, I am among the top boxers in my division. I want to win this bout so I can pursue opponents who have been avoiding me, including Edgar Berlanga and many more. Ballard is someone I take very seriously, but I fully anticipate stopping him.
