Early Life

James McArdle was raised in Glasgow’s Darnley neighborhood and attended St. Ninian’s High School in Giffnock after moving there as a child. He attended PACE Theatre Company when he was younger in neighbouring Paisley. After working as a child actor in movies, he decided to leave without telling his parents when he was 17 to take a bus to London to train as a professional actor. He got accepted to RADA after messing up his audition lines at first but managing to come back and convince the selectors.

He dropped out of the programme around the end of 2010, the same year he starred in the summer blockbuster Spur of the Moment by Anya Reiss at the Royal Court Theatre in London and had an appearance in Macbeth at The Globe. He garnered favourable reviews for his performance at the Chichester Festival Theatre in Ivan Turgenev’s A Month in the Country. He is presently a resident of England’s London.

James McArdle portrayed Agathon in Henrik Ibsen’s Emperor and Galilean at the National Theatre in 2011. Additionally, he played Robin Hood in Ella Hickson’s 2011 RSC adaptation of The Legend. He played Harold Abrahams in Mike Bartlett’s 2012 stage version of the motion picture Chariots of Fire, which premiered on May 9 at London’s Hampstead Theatre and moved to the West End on June 23 and ran through January 5, 2013. He portrayed King James I of Scotland in Rona Munro’s King James I, which was performed at the National Theatre and the Edinburgh International Festival in 2014.

He received the Ian Charleson Award in 2016 for his portrayal of Platonov in Platonov at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2015. In 2017, McArdle received a nomination for the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his work as Louis Ironson in Angels in America at the National Theatre Lyttleton in London. He continued working on the show when it moved to Broadway in March 2018 for an 18-week run at the Neil Simon Theatre, and James McArdle was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play for that role.
